Drupal Multimedia Book Announcement at Drupal.org

So I just made a formal announcement of the pending publication of Drupal Multimedia to Drupal.org, which was promoted to the front page of d.o!

What a fun and nerve-wracking task that was. Trying to distill several months of work into a small list. Tweaking every word to make sure it's right. Then even in the end, realizing I'd made the post in third person, but left my signature in first.

But this is nothing compared to the book! We've just started the editing process, and it's really great, seeing the words from the first chapter I wrote months ago, and having to face the reality of their obsolescence. I knew taking on the project that I wanted to write the book for Drupal 6, which didn't even exist at the time. So the first half of the book was speculative in a very real sense; few of us knew in October what merlinofchaos had planned for Views 2!

That's what the editing process is for though. We're making sure the book is relevant for Drupal 6. (And I'm trying to keep in the necessary parts to ensure it's still useful for those still using Drupal 5, even if those are relegated to hint and tip boxes.)

It's amazing how far Drupal has come over the years. That we can devote an entire book to integrating multimedia into Drupal is a testament to that. When the book is finally in your hands, I hope reading it will be as helpful for your continued learning as writing it has been for mine.

Though my next book might simply be a blog...

I would like to follow the series of Drupal. But I am only beginner reader.

some information about the book

Written for Drupal 6, this book is a comprehensive overview of integrating multimedia into your Drupal-powered web site. With hands-on examples and tutorials, the book is written for site developers, themers, and administrators. The book makes no assumptions about your skill level, although one should probably already have an understanding of Drupal and how to set up and configure a basic site. The book will guide you through its topics, gently moving the reader from basic concepts such as module set-up, to intermediate techniques such as creating views, to advanced methods such as writing jQuery and custom modules.

This is a great book. I have bought it myself and it has taught me a lot.

A wise man once said:
"If you want to learn a thing, read that; if you want to know a thing, write that; if you want to master a thing, teach that."

Open Source Learning

Good advice. I think that's a great way to live. And Open Source is the best place of all, as we are all teaching each other.

Congrats Aaron! I was

Congrats Aaron! I was wondering, after writing this book do you feel you are an overall better writer / blogger? Can you talk about how you got pulled into writing this book - or how you went about pursuing it?

Thanks

Wanted: Drupal book authors

Dries put out a call for Drupal authors last year, and I was inspired. Wrote a proposal and submitted it to Packt the next week.

I don't know if I'm a better writer after having written this. I'd like to think I am, but who knows? I know I still have a lot to learn, which will always be true.

I used to write fiction, and was part of a writer's group for seven years. Doing that, I do believe, was by far the best thing I've done for my writing skills. But this book is by far the most comprehensive writing I've done, and is certainly the largest project.

Now blogging, yes, I think I'm learning to be a better blogger every day I make a new post. But there, as well, I have so much more to learn.

Thanks!

Thanks!

The Society for Venturism has chosen me as the recipient of its charity for this year, to hopefully offer me cryonic preservation when the time comes. And this month, Longecity, an excellent forum for the discussion of issues related to extending the lifespan of humans, has offered up a matching grant of up to a thousand dollars to help out! So help out! Please.
